Getting Your 2010-2015 Toyota Prius Back Glass Replaced
If you drive a 2010 to 2015 Toyota Prius, you already know about that unique split rear window design on the hatchback. When the main upper back glass takes a hit and shatters, it leaves a massive mess inside your car. I've swept up enough tempered glass from the trunks of these 3rd Gen hybrids to last a lifetime. You definitely do not want those sharp little glass cubes falling into your hybrid battery cooling vent. Let's talk about how we clean up the mess and get that broken window replaced.
How I Handle the Installation
Replacing the rear glass on a Prius takes a specific approach. There is a rear spoiler, a wiper assembly, and a defroster circuit to deal with before we even touch the urethane. Here is exactly how I tackle the job in your driveway:
- Interior Protection: The very first thing I do is lay down thick protective blankets over your cargo area and fold-down seats. Tempered glass explodes everywhere upon impact, and I make sure the shards do not get ground into your fabric.
- Teardown and Removal: I unbolt the rear wiper motor and carefully take off the spoiler to get clean access to the top and side edges of the glass. Then, I use my cutout tools to slice through the tough factory urethane holding the remaining glass frame in place.
- Surface Cleaning: I bring out the heavy-duty shop vac and pull every stray piece of glass from the hatch channels and weatherstripping. After that, I trim the old adhesive down to a thin, flat base layer on the pinch weld.
- Primer Application: Any spots where the paint got scratched or bare metal is showing get a solid coat of high-quality auto glass primer. This stops rust from forming under the seal and gives the new glue a strong surface to bite into.
- Adhesive and Installation: I run a thick, consistent bead of premium, fast-curing urethane adhesive around the bare frame. Finally, I set the new back glass perfectly into the hatch, reconnect the defroster lines, and bolt your spoiler and wiper back together.
